How do the fraudsters get away with it?

As more and more cases of identification theft filter through into the national and worldwide press many people are surprised as to how so many of these alleged fraudsters are able to get away with their activities for so long. We have seen instances of hundreds of pounds being taken, we have seen instances of thousands of pounds being taken and we have even seen millions of pounds being taken fraudulently using fake ID and fake documentation. So how do the fraudsters manage to get away with it?

There are a number of reasons why identification theft often goes unreported and why so many of the alleged fraudsters managed to escape conviction. These include:-

Embarrassment

A number of people who have become victims of ID theft have often made basic errors in trusting people and in some cases have actually agreed to be part of potentially suspicious looking transactions. As a consequence a number of people have been rather embarrassed to step forward and report the theft of money even though in some cases it has literally left them penniless.

The Internet

As we mentioned in one of our earlier articles, the Internet has opened up a doorway into each and every home in the UK and across the world. The ability to communicate with any one person and potentially steal their identification documentation and details has been like a godsend to the criminal fraternity. By the time they have been traced to faraway lands they have likely disappeared or there is a lack of evidence to convict them.

Conclusion

The truth is that we all need to be more vigilant, more careful and unfortunately more suspicious of unsolicited contact from third parties requesting details, even if it is just confirmation of your password and username. Keep your private details private and ensure that nobody else has access to them except you.
